ABSTRACT:
Cognitive decline is a significant concern among the elderly, especially in rural communities. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a Nurse Led Cognitive Stimulation Program (NLCSP) on cognitive functions among elderly individuals in a selected rural area of Mehsana district, Gujarat. Objectives: To explore problems related to the decline cognitive functions among elderly. To develop and implement Nurse Led Cognitive Stimulation Program (NLCSP). To assess the effectiveness of Nurse Led Cognitive Stimulation Program (NLCSP) on cognitive functions among elderly. To find out the association between cognitive functions with their selected- demographic variables among elderly in the selected rural. Method: A pre-experimental one-group pretest–post-test design was adopted. The study included 60 elderly participants aged 60 years and above with mild to moderate cognitive impairment (MMSE score 11–23), selected through simple random sampling from Shekphur Vad, Vadnagar. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) before and after the intervention. Result: The NLCSP, comprising structured cognitive activities, tasks, and games, was administered as the intervention. The findings indicated that most participants were aged 60–65 years (48.33%), with a slightly higher proportion of males (53.33%). A majority were financially independent (63.33%), had existing health conditions (68.33%), and lacked prior exposure to cognitive training programs (95%). Post-test results demonstrated a significant improvement in cognitive function scores compared to pretest levels, indicating the effectiveness of the intervention. The study concludes that nurse-led cognitive stimulation programs are effective in enhancing cognitive functions among the elderly and can be integrated into community health nursing practices to promote healthy aging in rural populations. Conclusion: The Nurse led cognitive stimulation programme was effective (p<0.05) to improve the level of cognitive function among elderly.
