ABSTRACT:
Midwifery, as defined by the World Health Organization, involves skilled, compassionate, and evidence-based care throughout the stages of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. This study explores the impact of midwifery practices on maternal and infant health outcomes by reviewing global literature, including data from Midwifery-Led Units (MLUs), systematic reviews, and international health reports. The analysis focuses on clinical indicators such as maternal mortality, neonatal Apgar scores, postpartum complications, and rates of medical interventions. The findings reveal that midwifery-led care significantly reduces Caesarean section rates, increases spontaneous vaginal births, and lowers the incidence of birth complications such as postpartum hemorrhage and birth asphyxia. MLUs, in particular, promote natural childbirth and enhance care quality while fostering culturally sensitive and empowering experiences for mothers. Globally, studies suggest that up to 83% of maternal and neonatal deaths could be prevented through the expansion of midwifery services. Moreover, the economic benefits are substantial, with a cost-benefit ratio of 15.91, highlighting the value of investing in midwifery education and integration. This research underscores the importance of strengthening midwifery education, regulation, and collaboration within healthcare systems to achieve better maternal and newborn outcomes and contribute significantly toward global Sustainable Development Goals.
