A Study to Assess the Knowledge on Disaster Management among   B.Sc Nursing students at selected College of Nursing, Salem

ABSTRACT:

Background: A disaster is a natural or man made event that negatively affects the property, livelihood or human societies and environment. Natural disasters kill on a average 60,000 people per year globally. Globally, disasters were responsible for 0.1% of deaths over the past decade. The 2004 Indian ocean earthquake and tsunami; cyclone which struck Myanmar in 2008. In 2020, 389 natural disasters were reported killing 15,080 people, affecting 98.4 million others and costing 171.3 billion US$2, apart from COVID -19 pandemic ,the year was dominated by climate related disasters. Objectives: 1. To assess the level of knowledge on disaster management among B.Sc Nursing students. 2. To find out the association between knowledge on disaster management and their selected demographic variables of the B.Sc Nursing students. Methods: A descriptive research design was adopted to assess the knowledge on disaster management among B.Sc Nursing second year students at Kamala College of Nursing, Salem. A total sample of 25 B.Sc Nursing students were selected by simple random sampling technique. Results: The findings showed that majority 16 % had moderate knowledge, 72% had adequate knowledge, 12% had inadequate knowledge on Disaster management. Conclusion: There was a significant association between the level of knowledge and selected demographic variables among B.Sc Nursing second year students.

INTRODUCTION:

Disaster management essentially deals with management of resources and information towards a disastrous event and is measured by now efficiently, effectively and seamlessly one coordinates these resources The ability of effectively deals with disasters has become a challenge to modern technology.1

 

Disaster management has three phases as follows pre impact phase(forecast ,early warning, preparedness), impact phase(close monitoring of impact, establishing emergency communication and deploying rescue team) and post impact phase (medical care, food, clothing and shelter for rescued, disposal of bodies and prevention of epidemics.2

 

NEED FOR STUDY:

Disaster management is very important to survive in the case of natural or a major man made disaster and can be defined as the organization and management resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies in particular preparedness response and recovery in order to lesson the impact of sudden disaster.3

Many regions in India are highly vulnerable to natural disasters on account of geological conditions. Over 8 % Indian area 40 million hectares is prone to floods and average area affected by floods annually is about 8 million hectares, 68% area is susceptible to drought.4-5

 

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

A study to assess the knowledge on disaster management among B.Sc Nursing students at selected Nursing College, Salem.

 

OBJECTIVES:

1.     To assess the level of knowledge on disaster management among B.Sc Nursing second year students.

2.     To find out the association between knowledge on disaster management and their selected demographic variables of the B.Sc Nursing students.

 

OPERATIONAL DEFINITION:

Assess: Identify the knowledge of B.Sc Nursing students on disaster management by using suitable     questionnaires.

 

Knowledge:

Knowledge is correct facts and information obtained by B.Sc Nursing students about disaster management assessed by answering structured questionnaire.

 

Disaster management:

Disaster management covers all aspects of preventive and protective measures, preparedness and rescue relief and rehabilitation operation.

 

B.Sc Nursing students:

Individuals who is enrolled in a professional nursing (or) vocational nursing educational programme and studying in second year B.Sc Nursing class.

 

HYPOTHESIS:

H1: There is significant association between selected demographic variables and knowledge on disaster management among B.Sc Nursing students.

 

ASSUMPTION:

1. The level of the knowledge among B.Sc Nursing students differs from individual to individual. 2.The selected demographic variables may have influence on B.Sc Nursing students knowledge.

 

REVIEW OF LITERATURE:

Ceeba Francis (2019) conducted a descriptive study, to assess the knowledge on disaster preparedness among college students Bangalore. The study was conducted on 100 subjects by using convenient sampling technique. The result was 32% had inadequate knowledge on disaster preparedness. The range of knowledge score was between 0-40. The mean was 23.26 with a standard deviation of 8.9.6

 

Priyesh Marskole et al, (2018) conducted on exploratory research, to assess the awareness on disaster management among school going children in Gwalior. A sample of 110 participants, aged between 12-16 years by using purposive sampling technique. The result revealed that out of 110 students 87.2% (before intervention) and 98.2% (after intervention) had knowledge on disaster management.7

 

Pramod Kumar et al (2016 ) conducted a descriptive study, to assess the knowledge on disaster management among B.Sc nursing students at Teerthanker Mahaveer College of Nursing, Moradabad.

 

U.P. The study conducted on 60 subjects by using purposive sampling technique.The result was 81.5% students had moderate knowledge,15.1% students had inadequate knowledge and 3.4% students had adequate knowledge.8

 

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:

The research methodology is the master plan specifying the methods and procedure for collecting and analyzing the needed information in a research study.

 

Research approach: Quantitative approach Research Design: Descriptive Research Design. Research variables:

 

Dependent variables:

In this study dependent variables are knowledge on disaster management

 

Extraneous variables:

Extraneous variables are educational status, age, gender,religion, type of family, previous knowledge, source of knowledge, previous % of mark, place of residence.

 

Setting of the study:

The study was conducted at Kamala College of Nursing , Salem.

 

Population:

Population in the study is the B.Sc Nursing second year students of Kamala College of Nursing.

 

Sample size:

The study sample consist of 25 B.Sc Nursing students.

 

Sampling technique:

The sampling technique selected for the present study was simple random sampling.

 

Criteria for sample selection:

Inclusive criteria:

1.     B.Sc Nursing second year students, who are willing to participate in this study.

2.     Students, who are available during the period of data collection.

 

Tool:

Structured questionnaire.

 

Description tool:

Tool consists of two parts demographic variables, knowledge variables.

 

Demographic variables:

Demographic variables consists of questions such as age, gender ,religion, type of family, previous knowledge, source of knowledge, previous % of mark, place of residence.

 

Knowledge variables:

Knowledge variables consists of 20 knowledge questionnaire to assess the knowledge on disaster management.

 

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:

DISCUSSION:

An descriptive study was conducted to assess the knowledge on disaster management among nursing students. A total sample size of 25 nursing students were included in the study, who filled in the questionnaire. The questionnaire comprised of 20 knowledge questions and 8 demographic questions. The finding of the study indicated that the knowledge on disaster management was adequate (72%) among B.Sc Nursing students.

 

CONCLUSION:

The study concluded that majority of students have adequate knowledge on disaster management . The present study was aimed to assess knowledge on disaster management among B.Sc Nursing second year students of Kamala College of Nursing, Salem and found 72% had adequate knowledge, 16% had moderate knowledge and 12% had inadequate knowledge.

 

IMPLICATION:

The findings of the study have implication in various areas of nursing profession i.e . Nursing practice, Nursing adminisration, Nursing education and Nursing research.

 

Implication of the nursing practice:

Nurses can assess knowledge on disaster management among   the patients   who are admitted in hospitals.

 

Implication of the nurses administration:

The nurse administrator can arrange and conduct in service education programmers on disaster management

 

Implication of the nursing  education:

Disaster management can be included in the curriculum of all paramedical education .

 

Implication of the nursing research:

The nurse researcher can undertake similar studies on assessment of knowledge on disaster management among college students using different tool in various setting .

 

RECOMMENDATION:

·       Future research related to disaster management may provide a more in depth understanding of disaster management.

·       The findings of the study may assist in a quantitative study utilizingsignificantly more participant.
